Friday February 24th will see the release of the netherlands‘ genre-defying second full-length “Ampul” on CD and LP.

The record will be released at the 3voor12 Gelderland launch, on Feb 24th, 11:57pm. Location: Bosch, Arnhem @ Gesel XL.

the netherlands (band)
the netherlands are a dutch musical group formed in 2008. the band consists of Boyke Kooijmans, Jean-Luc Rouvroye, Patrick Thüss, Rob van Uden and Ted van de Wijdeven.
After their 2009 debut ´We are not´ the band significantly changed their musical direction, abandoning pop forms in favour of a more abstract approach and using traditional live instrumentation to create electronic sounding music.

Full-length debut ‘We are not´, recorded with engineer Pieter Kloos, reveals the sound of a band in search of the right balance between pop forms and structures and their more left field leanings. When the netherlands get their act right, ‘We are not´ offers some truly exciting music. On the first two tracks - ’On a breeze’ and ‘The charm’ - the netherlands naturally melt energetic, psychedelic flavoured pop with shards of white noise and electro references. the band recoils into darker territory on ‘Del.kinki’, another stand-out track with subtle references to both Boards of Canada’s ‘Geogaddi’ and Portishead’s ‘Third’. The pastoral ‘Sleepy head’ and meandering instrumentals ‘Kam’ and ‘Seventyseven’ show a gentler, atmospheric side of the netherlands’ style.
As bold as the effort may be, the album’s rich eclecticism doesn’t make it an easy listen overall. Nevertheless both the albums’ singles, ’On a breeze’ and ‘The charm’, reached the number one position in the Dutch indie charts in 2010; boosting the netherlands’ self-confidence and their urge to push their music forward.

Non-album track ‘Drift’, recorded in 2010 but not released until 2011, is a new creative peak for the band. The song’s not yet a major shift in musical direction, as it clearly builds on the art rock side of the aforementioned ‘We are not´-tracks. Production-wise ‘Drift’ - with its processed vocals, layers of loops and cluttering percussion - sounds more experimental than anything on their debut though: an indication of things to come.

‘Ampul’ sees the netherlands abandoning pop song structures and traditional vocal based melody in favour of quietly drifting, minimally arranged music. The band puts strong emphasis on repetition, fluid guitar-and-keyboard atmospherics, loops and vocal samples. ‘Ampul’ firmly places the netherlands’ music within the krautrock/ambient/indie electronics context. This new departure is indirectly the result of the netherlands’ new approach to live performing: throughout 2010 their live set evolved from a classic ‘band do songs’ performance to a collective improvisation in sound and structure.
For ‘Ampul’ the band recorded eight pieces of music, again in Pieter Kloos’ studio The Void. The different tracks are blended together into something that resembles a twenty five minute DJ-set. Sounds and effects work their way in and out of the mix, cleverly leading listeners through different highs and lows. The result is cut up into the two 12 inch singles that make up side a (‘lost loop’) and b (‘the uplifting’) of the record.
the netherlands make their electronic-tinged music sound simple, warm and inviting. Underneath the surface there are simple but engaging melodies to be found. ‘Ampul’ is constructed to sound no more complex than it needs to be. This band may not do pop songs anymore, but they haven’t lost their pop sensibilities. This is music that can easily be enjoyed by an audience wider than merely experimental listeners.
‘Ampul’ will be released on Laterax Recordings February 24 2012 as a LP and CD.

    

OUT NOW: DOKTOR SCHNITT "KATERUSHKI" / SHOWS

OUT NOW: DOKTOR SCHNITT “KATERUSHKI” Without further ado: 
Kateruski is Bulgarian for playground.

The men themselves describe it as “dope, giddy, and highly danceable”. And if this follow-up pulls as many aces as their debut album did, we’ll be seeing Doktor Schnitt on many a stage or festival in the coming year. 
Doktor Schnitt is the Rotterdam based live dance trio composed of one bassist with loads of pedals, one drummer, and one percussionist with plenty of percussives.

Musicians Philipp Ernsting, Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva, and Nique Quentin make drum ‘n’ bass-oriented music that veers toward funk, disco, jungle, and ambient, performed with a tight punk attitude. 
Their second album promises to be very danceable indeed. Less drum ‘n’ bass then their first, more electronic, more tribal, more hip-hop, dub, and even gabber (!) and latin.

One track was made together with Niels Bjerg (WEGO).
On another, turntable octopus Enio Ramalho (Deformer, Wormskull, Stöma) plays along.
The Bulgarian singer-songbird Ekatarina Aguelova (Acid Folk Five) is to be heard on the title track.
The song “Verschieber” is a clear homage to Steve Reich.
Artists Johan Kleinjan got inspiration in London, home of drum ‘n‘ bass. and returned with amazing artwork for the album.

In 2007, the debut album (Doktor Schnitt) was named “a drum ‘n‘ bass thunderbolt out of clear blue heavens”. The Rotterdam label Laterax thought so highly of it, they decided to release the debut after hearing the first demo. It was recorded by Remko Schouten (Pavement / Bettie Serveert / Coparck) and topped the 3voor12 listening booth for quite some time.

Many many shows followed, including Rotown, Off_Corso, Festival De Affaire, Bitterzoet (Subbacultcha) and Bibelot.
The Katerushki release party is on Friday, December 30th in Rotown (Rotterdam), with a preview on Saturday, December 10th in Breda’s Hijgend Hert.
An album tour will follow in the coming months.

DOKTOR SCHNITT For all of us eagerly waiting since their 2007 debut, Doktor Schnitt are back with a shout, releasing their follow-up “Katerushki” at Rotterdam’s Rotown on December 30!

In related news, Doktor Schnitt’s Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva is a finalist for this year’s Jur Naessens Music Prize. This is one of the most important music prizes in The Netherlands for young, ground-breaking, creative talent.
